OUR CHURCH
St Mary's Church, Wingfield
At the center of our picturesque village, St Mary’s Church stands as a beacon of history, faith, and community. With its ancient walls and timeless charm, it is far more than just a building. It is the beating heart of Wingfield—a place that brings us together, regardless of faith or belief, pumping life and connection into the shared lives of our residents.
A Rich History of Faith and Heritage
St Mary’s Church has been a fixture in Wingfield for centuries, its origins stretching back to the medieval period. Built in the late 13th or early 14th century, it is an architectural gem. The Grade II* listed building boasts stunning Gothic features, such as a striking tower, elegant stained glass windows, and intricately carved stonework, which whisper stories of generations past. Once part of the medieval Manor of Bradford, the church’s history is intertwined with the Benedictine nuns of Shaftesbury Abbey and later Keynsham Abbey.

Inside the church, you’ll find a beautiful 15th-century pulpit and monuments that connect us to the lives of those who came before. The Baily monument—a limestone chest tomb—stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of local families who shaped our community.

St Mary’s is more than a historical site; it’s a living, breathing part of our village, where tradition and modernity coexist to serve the needs of all.
